Importance of First Semester Experiences
The research literature confirms what counselors, advisors, faculty and policy makers have known for decades. Students’ experiences during the first semester profoundly impact persistence decisions. Although it is convenient to assess students’ at orientation or matriculation, instruments given at these times cannot measure students’ reactions to the school’s academic and social environments. For example, how can you assess students’ feelings about their instructors or other students until they have attended class or met their classmates?
